Welcome!

Welcome to my blog, “Profiteor”! This will be the location where I will post updates, photos, and newsletters before, during, and after my year of service in the United Kingdom through the Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), so please check in periodically to receive the most recent news.

Now, some of you may be wondering about the name of my blog (I hope you find it an intriguing title). “Profiteor” (pronounced pro-fee-tay-oar) is Latin for three different English verbs: I confess, I profess, and I praise, and these three meanings are the reason I chose “Profiteor” as the title instead of something a little more obvious. During my next year in the United Kingdom, I will be posting periodically entries and photos which will do exactly what the title suggests. I will be confessing my struggles and misconceptions; the emotions and experiences I do not yet know of. I will be professing my triumphs, learning moments, and whatever else might happen in a year. Finally I will be praising God’s glory and love experienced in the most mundane aspects of life, thousands of miles from where I grew up. These are the reasons for the unusual title, and how it will frame my future posts.

Double Digits

So, somehow, I now have less than 100 days left at my placement. I am in the double digits.

When I hit 100 days this week, I posted a status and photo in acknowledgement of the ticking clock, not because I'm excited to go home, but because I can no longer deny that I'm going home or that I have more time than I actually do.

In three months, I will be leaving my home and community in England, and, considering I still feel like I'm February half of the time, it feels like I'm going to blink my eyes and suddenly be back in Wisconsin.  Don't get me wrong. I am very much looking forward to eating a brat with kraut and a nice, cold, non-licorice tasting root beer, but it is going to be very hard leaving this place, or more specifically the people, that now holds my heart.

So, I'm am taking this these 100 days to take a photo of my life daily, and every 10 days or so (internet permitting) I will post those photos here.  I've had 275 days to figure out what my life looks like here, so hopefully I will be able to spend the next 98 days accurately portraying what my life is.

The photos might be a regular part of my work or friendships, or something unique, but by the time I leave you will have a better idea of my life and I will have a way to better remember the people and places I love.

My placement, Saint James Church.
